I have no idea how this works, but I would imagine that magnets make it nearly impossible to open. I imagine that there is some kind of circuit that is closed when you apply a magnet, but then open at the same time when you remove the magnet, thus allowing the magnet to be inserted in the box. This has been my best guess, but I have no way of proving it.
