Product managers are tasked with coming up with new products to sell. A product manager who has a lot of experience can come up with 16,000 unique ideas in 20 minutes. In this article The Perez Notes will show you how they do it.
Step #1:
Fill the Product Name column
A product manager will do market research, brainstorming and competitor analyses to come up with their ideas for new products. A recent survey showed that the average product manager can think of 16,000 different products in 20 minutes by using this method. Let’s walk through each step:
Step #2:
Start with a random word from the A-Z list. A is for Aardvark, B is for… well you get the idea.
Step #3:
Take that random word and create a product to solve the problem it describes. For example, Aardvarks are notoriously poor swimmers and can easily drown in small puddles of water. A solution would be an inflatable pool with ladders so Aardvarks could climb out if they find themselves stuck or tired from their aquatic escapades. This saves Aardvarks all over the world!
Step #4:
A Product Manager should make sure to take the Aardvark’s perspective when creating new products. It is important for their mental health and well-being if they know that there are people who care about them like this product does! Once you think it will solve a problem, go ahead and submit your idea on IdeaScale (a platform used by companies such as Comcast). Don’t forget to vote up ideas from other users too so we can all find great solutions together!
Step #5:
Use this as your seed to grow a tree of words related to it, connecting them through simple ideas expressed in natural language sentences using any grammatical structure you want.
Step #6:
In step three, look at all of these generated new concepts and select one or more that would be useful for your business goals based on their alignment to what you’re currently working on. Try taking some keywords from those concept names too if they seem relevant, maybe even create an actual list out of them but don’t worry about being exhaustive here because we’ll do that later anyway! For now just pick something interesting and go forward with it!
Step #7:
After you’ve selected a product idea to work on, in this step try adding any number of the generated sentences (or just the ones you want) to your product document.
Step #8:
Repeat steps one through four as many times as you’d like! A few more rounds can’t hurt and might even yield better results than only going once or twice. You may also consider using different seed keywords for each round, if possible but we’ll save that topic for another guide entirely. Make sure to put a number here so people know what step of the outline this is at.
Step #9:
Congrats you’ve finished writing your first blog post!
